The Localist: Rachel Boguski and Shannon Lorenz of Refresh Market
It's hard to find a Squamish local who hasn't heard of Refresh Market whose reputation as one of BC's biggest indie markets has grown so much that people throughout the Sea to Sky, Metro Vancouver and beyond are marking their calendars for the biannual affair. Behind the event are Rachel Boguski and Shannon Lorenz, two style-savvy locals who bonded over what was missing in the community. Here's what they love about living in our town.
Tell us your favourite thing about the Squamish lifestyle.
Shannon: I love being outside in nature with my kids, and appreciating the beauty of our everyday surroundings: eagles, mountains, rivers, snow, sunshine and fresh air.
Rachel: I’ve always been a city girl, but I find Squamish’s casual mountain lifestyle totally refreshing. I’ve got everything I need: coffee, mountains, the ocean, community and plenty of breathing room.
Favourite local spot?
Shannon: My favorite mountain bike trail is Crouching Squirrel Hidden Monday (it's our date night go to) followed by dinner at the Spice Root. With the kids, Judd Beach is one of our favorite spots. It's quiet, peaceful and there's lots of space for the kids to run around. In the summer, when I'm on my own it's Friday nights at the gondola watching the sunset and listening to music (it's also my job - so really a win, win!)
Rachel: Porteau Cove is our go-to retreat. We’ll often pick up dinner and head down for sunset, book an oceanfront site for a day or camp out for the week. It’s our family’s way of hitting the reset button.
Sunday morning ritual?
Shannon: If it wasn't ski season, my Sunday morning would be an early morning gym session followed by homemade breakfast and then out and about with the kids. Usually, we go to the Bean Brackendale for coffees and do a play at the park or the river
Rachel: I love our Downtown. It reminds me a lot of the neighbourhood in which I grew up in Vancouver in the sense that it’s sized just right and I always see familiar faces. If we’re not brunching at home or with friends, we’ll head Downtown for coffee, fresh flowers, groceries, a little wander in and out of the shops and a Nexen Beach stop if the weather is right.
Founded in 2011, Refresh Market is Squamish's largest indie marketplace with more than 100 vendors offering a wide selection of vintage, handmade and curated goods. The market is held biannually at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park along with Refresh Kids which takes place annually each spring.
