The Geological Origins of Stawamus Chief Mountain

The second in the Lunch and Learns Series presented by the Howe Sound Biosphere, co-hosting with Tourism Squamish.

Make your way to the Squamish Adventure Centre to enjoy Dr. Bob Turner's "I am a Geologist" series featuring the Stawamus Chief Mountain, Squamish, BC

This event is for those interested in geology and how these unique, iconic places in the Howe Sound Biosphere Region were formed. This event will be of particular interest to hikers and rock climbers, but is relevant to anyone interested in the history of our spectacular landscape. It will shed new light on the familiar yet infamous Stawamus Chief, and what makes these landmarks legendary for the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh People.

Volcanologist and Professor, Dr. Steve Quane, a founding member of the Fire and Ice GeoRegion will share the geological context of the featured geosites in the biosphere region.

About the speakers:

With a PhD in Geology, Dr. Bob Turner is a retired federal scientist and former mayor of Bowen Island (2005-2011). Bob makes films about the Salish Sea region, and is an honorary founding member of the Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative Society.

Dr. Steve Quane, in the years since earning his PhD in Volcanology from UBC, he has been a Geology Professor, Director of a Mineral Museum and a National Geographic Explorer. Currently, he is a multimedia educator teaching field courses in Systems and Sustainability at UBC, researching volcanic landscapes and designing and implementing interpretive materials in the Sea to Sky Region.
